Product Description

Extreme Cold Weather (ECW) gear is provided to participants in the United States Antarctic Program (USAP), including Carhartt jackets. Highly insulated Carhartt overalls and jackets are a popular choice among outdoor workers in Antarctica, especially since the “Big Red” parkas can feel bulky and overly warm during the summer season. These Carhartt jackets, often issued as work gear, feature arctic quilt lining designed to offer comfort in cold environments.

Each of these Carhartt jackets represent a unique piece of Antarctic history, carrying its own story! Visit the Carhartt website to view their size chart.

Condition Notes:

These jackets show damage which will need to be repaired before the jacket can be used/worn. This damage includes tears or holes in the outer lining, torn out pockets, etc. The most common damage to these jackets are tears along seams, usually on the arm or behind the collar (see example pictures). No jacket sold under this listing will be damaged to the extent that it requires more than reasonably simple repairs.

In addition to the damage, the jackets will show wear and tear, due to heavy use in Antarctica. Some may have field patches,  paint spots, missing zipper pulls, etc. All jackets will show some level of staining and fading. Most will have the size written on one of the breast pockets in black sharpie. They will need to be washed/cleaned after purchase.

Antarctic Surplus Guarantee

This website sells parkas, clothing, and gear which have been retired from the United States Antarctic Program. All have seen service in one or more of the three American Antarctic research stations, unless specified otherwise in the product’s description. As such, they will show some degree of wear/tear/use.

We hope our gear will serve you, wherever you are, just as well as it did the scientists, researchers, and support staff who relied on it at the bottom of the world!
