This Snow Goose parka entered service in 1986. This is one of the rare parkas which stray away from the Big Red model, though as the tag is very faded, we cannot tell what model of parka this actually is. The parka is significantly lighter and less bulky than a Big Red, and falls to a regular jacket length rather than covering the tops of the thighs. There are only two pockets on the front of the parka, with the Velcro for a name tag on one of the pockets rather than the left breast. The zipper cover is fastened using snap buttons rather than Velcro.
The hood ruff is genuine coyote fur, and is in excellent condition. There is a dark stain on the front of the parka, on one of the pockets- it looks as though a pen or marker inside that pocket burst. A few other less prominent stains are there and there, with reasonably light UV fading throughout.
Did you know that each Big Red used by the USAP program has a serial number written on the inside flap of one of the pockets? This serial number, used to help the program keep track of their gear, usually includes the parka size and the year it entered service.
This parka’s USAP serial number is: 86XXS020
